The Greater Fort Lauderdale area is a primary choice destination for gay and lesbian people looking to relocate, buy first and second second homes, and make real estate investments. Fort Lauderdale has one of the fastest growing gay populations in the Country. If you remember Fort Lauderdale from college break in the 70's or haven't been here in years, it is a totally different place. Be among tens of thousands of GLBT people who are have discovered why Fort Lauderdale is THE place to live, work, invest and play.
Broward County, particularly the cities of Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors, and Oakland Park, are top choices for GLBT people? Simply because Broward County is just so gay friendly. I have never heard that a client has felt uncomfortable or discriminated against in any neighborhood, condominium or city where I have sold them properties - a big plus for Broward County. The Broward County Human Rights Ordinance prohibits, among other things, discrimination based on sexual orientation, and provides for registration of domestic partnerships. There are 30 cities within Broward County, (2012 pop. 1,800,000) with Fort Lauderdale, (founded just over 100 years ago) being the County seat. Broward is very accepting and welcoming of its GLBT population. While there are areas in Broward that have higher concentrations of GLBT residents, (primarily in-town coastal neighborhoods) the GLBT population is well integrated and respresented throughout Broward, Dade and Palm Beach Counties. There really isn’t a Southeast Florida location where GLBT people would not feel comfortable and at home.
Wilton Manors, "The Island City" is a small city in Broward County that has become famous for having the highest percentage of GLBT of any city, and a very pro-active GLBT-friendly government. When I started in real estate over 40 years ago, the town of Wilton Manors was a sleepy working class town. Today it is vibrant with a main street packed with businesses owned by and catering mainly to the GLBT community, and housing stock from budget to luxury condos and townhomes, suburban style mid-century and waterfront homes and new construction luxury homes offering the GLBT housing choices to fit any budget and desire. Values in Wilton Manors soared thanks to investment of the GLBT dollar. Wilton Drive, the Main Street of Wilton Manors, is lined with businesses owned by and catering to the GLBT community.
Four decades ago (I was very young!) I was the first Fort Lauderdale Realtor to market directly to GLBT people around the Country using the Internet. A member of the National Association of Gay and Lesbian Real Estate Professionals, I have seen a huge evolution in the perspective of GLBT real estate buyers over 40 years. The GLBT demographic gets more diverse every day, and the integration of the GLBT population into the community at large continues to develop in ways that enhance the quality of life in Broward County for everyone. You can be assured that like thousands of GLBT clients I have helpeed in my career, I would have your best interests in mind helping you make South Florida Home.
